Generally when I play a cross court volley short I am not looking to hit the nick. I am aiming for the ball to bounce twice before reaching the sidewall. This makes it incredibly difficult for your opponent to retrieve the shot. If he does manage to there is little or no angle for him to work with. The shot almost always looks like a straight volley shot and in both clips you can see my opponent head for the front corner before having to make a brutally hard turn to try and retrieve the situation.
As with the cross court drop the technical aspects of this shot are the same as for the straight volley short. However, the beauty of this shot is that you do not have to work with very fine margins on the front wall. Yet again the angle is far more important. As you can see in the forehand clip, the ball ends up taking its second bounce in the middle of the service box. The backhand clip shows a more precise and aggressive shot where my opponent has no chance of returning the ball.
